Division Purpose

The Division of Communications and Humanities is designed to give students a solid academic foundation encompassing critical thinking, public speaking, writing, and technological skills.  The programs in this division- Mass Communications, English, and Interdisciplinary Studies -  are designed to encourage students to examine the common issues and themes that run throughout our history, culture, and society, providing a well-rounded, human experience.  Attention is given to theoretical foundations, hands-on application, experiential learning, and the development of media skills.  The division strives to enhance students’ aesthetic and artistic awareness while improving skills in spoken, written and digital formats.

In order to examine the range and depth of human thought, several platforms are used to expose and train students.  Those interested in audio production are supported through a student-run and student-produced show called The Blaze, a weekly radio broadcast.  The video production facility includes a TV studio and control room with a media lab, equipped with the latest editing software.  Students are able to design and produce video projects from conception through post production.  Those interested in print media are afforded an online-student newspaper called Shaw Bear Facts, which gives students an opportunity to gain practical reporting and writing experience.

A candidate for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communications, English or Interdisciplinary Studies must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours. Total credits include at least 48 credit hours of General Education courses. Additional courses may be required to build fundamental concepts. A candidate must earn the grade of “C” or better in all major courses.
