The Interdisciplinary Studies Program is individualized to suit each student’s personal interests and career goals. Rather than restricting the student to a single specialized body of knowledge, the Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies Program allows each student, with assistance from departmental faculty, to study any two of the fields offered as majors or minors by Shaw University or any CRC. The students learn how to work with these fields in interdisciplinary ways to achieve a strong liberal arts education.

Students in the program of Interdisciplinary Studies must take two courses (6 credit hours) with the Interdisciplinary Studies faculty, ideally during their senior year: one course in the fall and one in the spring (IDS 318 and IDS 418).

Students must also take 24 credits from both of their chosen fields. With the help of academic advisement from departmental faculty, the students will choose 4 courses (12 credit hours) from each of their two declared disciplines. The courses have to be a minimum of 200 level in each discipline. Instructors in these courses are all specialists in the respective disciplines. See departmental checklist for possible combinations of courses in the two chosen disciplines of concentration. Students also take 30-32 credit hours of free electives.
