Policy on Disruptive Behavior

Academic excellence demands that appropriate behavior and decorum be maintained by Shaw University students at all times. Any behavior that interferes or interrupts educational activities or infringes on the rights and privileges of others, or interferes with faculty or staff engaged in the teaching process will not be tolerated (see Code of Conduct). Disruptive behavior is defined as any behavior which causes disorder, disruption or turmoil to exist in the campus environment. It includes but is not limited to conduct, dress, unauthorized use of technology or failure to adhere to campus rules, regulations, policies or procedures.

When a student is judged to have engaged in disruptive behavior in the classroom which cannot be controlled by the instructor the following applies:

  1.  Security will be called in to remove the student.
  2.  An incident report will be completed by the instructor and filed with the office of Judicial Services / Student Affairs and Division Head requiring the student to attain permission to return to class. Copies will be sent to the student and their advisor.
  3. The instructor has the discretion of allowing a student to return to class.
  4. Mediation may be used as a resolution.
  5. Moving a student to a different section of the same class may be considered by the Division Head.
  6. The student will be held accountable for any work missed during their suspension from class. Make up work is at the discretion of the instructor.
  7. Any recurrence of disruptive behavior on behalf of the same student may result in withdrawal from class or possible grade of “F”.
  8. If the student has other classes with the same instructor they may be removed from that class also.
