Division of Science and Technology

Division Purpose:

The Division of Science and Technology offers a range of courses and programs that provide students with the  scientific and technological expertise they will need to excel in today’s increasingly digital world. Computational problem solving has become so widespread that a degree in computer science prepares students for success not just in careers as programmers, but in a diverse range of fields such as business, medicine, banking, information technology, and biotechnology among many others. Many of the fastest growing and best paying jobs today are directly related to computers and software. The Division of Science and Technology strives to create graduates who will be competitive and successful in these fast growing careers.

The mission of the Division of Science and Technology is to prepare increasing numbers of students for employment and graduate programs in the fields of life, physical sciences and technology through its Bachelor of Science degree program offerings. The division goal is to become a center of excellence and recognition for producing highly competitive students with backgrounds and interests in these fields and thereby having a significant impact on the projected manpower shortage of science professionals at the national level.Through the pursuit of a rigorous research program, the division seeks to both propel forward the state of the art, and to enrich the undergraduate experience through exposure to, and involvement in, actual research. Through the pursuit of a rigorous education program, which includes hands on experience, the division strives to produce graduates who are well prepared to work professionally or go on to graduate education in sciences, mathematics, computer science or computer information systems.

Another primary mission of the Division is to provide introductory computer training to all students. The ever increasing presence of technology in nearly all aspects of society has meant that basic computer skills are a necessary component to success in college and in life. The Division of Science and Technology strives to provide these necessary skills to all students. The Division also provides science and mathematics general education classes.

A candidate for the Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Information Systems, Computer Science or Mathematics must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours. Total credits include at least 45 credit hours of General Education courses. Additional courses may be required to build fundamental concepts.
