African American Studies Minor

The minor in African American Studies provides students with a deeper understanding of the African American experience. The courses offered are in History, Philosophy, Music, Political Studies, Religion, Media, and Literature, and they stress analysis, diversity, critical thinking, and written skills through a rigorous curriculum that explores the African American experience.

 

The minor in African American Studies will require students to earn 15 credits in classes at the level of 200 or higher, with at least 6 of the 15 credits at the level of 300 or higher. Students must take at least one class in each of the three categories listed below. The remaining six credits can be from any approved class. A grade of at least a C must be earned in each course.

  • HIS 203  - African American History I
  • HIS 204  - African American History II

 

3 credits chosen from:

  • PHI 285  - African American Philosophy
  • MUS 227  - African American Music
  • THR 226  - African American Theatre
  • REL 295  - African American Religion
  • REL 304   - African Religion and Philosophy
  • MCO 341  - Multicultural Media
  • POL 320  - African Americans in American Politics

 

3 credits chosen from:

  • ENG 320  - African American Literature I
  • ENG 321  - African American Literature II
  • ENG 421  - The Harlem Renaissance
  • ENG 423  - The Black Arts Movement

 

The remaining six credits can be from any approved class as determined by the advisor who oversees the African American Studies minor and approved by the dean of the School of Arts, Sciences, and the Humanities. 

NOTE:  There are History and English Special Topics courses that might count toward the minor based on the subject matter of the course.  These courses will clearly be identified when offered.
